Sir Richard Starkey MBE (born 7 July 1940), better known as Ringo Starr, is an English musician, singer, songwriter, and actor best known as the drummer for the Beatles. Starr sung lead vocals with the Beatles on occasion, generally for one song on each album, such as “Yellow Submarine” and “With a Little Help from My Friends.” He also penned and sang the Beatles’ songs “Don’t Pass Me By” and “Octopus’ Garden,” as well as four more.

Starr, hospitalised for extended periods of time as a child due to life-threatening illnesses. He worked for British Rail for a short time before starting an apprenticeship as a machinist at a Liverpool school equipment maker. Following that, Starr grew fascinated in the UK skiffle craze and acquired a strong affection for the genre. In 1957, he co-founded his first band, the Eddie Clayton Skiffle Group, which received several notable local gigs before the fad was overtaken by American rock and roll in early 1958. Starr was a member of another Liverpool autographs band, Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, when the Beatles formed in 1960. After gaining moderate success in the UK and Hamburg, he left the Hurricanes in August 1962 to join the Beatles Autographs, replacing Pete Best.

Starr’s playing approach, which emphasised feel above technical virtuosity, prompted many drummers to revaluate their performance in terms of composition. He also inspired modern drumming techniques such as the matched grip, lower tuning of the drums, and the use of muffling devices on tonal rings. His favourite recorded performance, in his opinion, was on the Beatles’ “Rain.” Inducted into the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1999. Rolling Stone readers voted him the fifth-greatest drummer of all time in 2011. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a Beatle in 1988 and once as a solo artist in 2015. Named a Knight Bachelor in the 2018 New Year Honours for contributions to music.
