Benjamin Earl King (né Nelson; September 28, 1938 – April 30, 2015) was an American soul and R&B singer and record producer.
He rose to prominence as one of the principal lead singers of the R&B vocal group The Drifters. Notably singing the lead vocals of one of their biggest global hit singles (and only U.S. No. 1 hit), “Save the Last Dance for Me”. As a soloist, Ben E King Autograph is best known as the singer and co-composer of “Stand by Me”. Which became a US Top 10 hit, both in 1961 and later in 1986 (used as the theme to the film of the same name). A number one hit in the United Kingdom in 1987. Also placed on the RIAA’s list of Songs of the Century.

Along with “Stand By Me”, King’s songs “There Goes My Baby” and “Spanish Harlem” also appeared on the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll. His single “Supernatural Thing” also reached the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100. King, inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, as a member of the Drifters. Nominated as a solo artist. Additionally, inducted alongside the Drifters into Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000. As well as the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2012 (solo).
Stand By Me
“Stand by Me” a song originally performed in 1961 by American singer-songwriter Ben E. King autograph and written by him, along with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, who together used the pseudonym Elmo Glick. According to King, the title is derived from, inspired by, a spiritual written by Sam Cooke and J. W. Alexander called “Stand by Me Father,” recorded by the Soul Stirrers with Johnnie Taylor singing lead.
Featured on the soundtrack of the 1986 film of the same name. A corresponding music video, featuring Ben E King Autograph along with actors River Phoenix and Wil Wheaton, released to promote the film. Also featured in a 1987 European commercial of Levi’s 501 jeans, contributing to greater success in Europe. Besides, in 2012, royalties estimated to have topped $22.8 million (£17 million). Making it the sixth highest-earning song as of its era. 50% of the royalties were paid to King.

In 2015, King’s original version inducted into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress. As “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”, just under five weeks before his death. Later in the year, the 2015 lineup of the Drifters recorded it in tribute.
