Early Life and Career

Graeme Souness, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1953. He grew up supporting local club Heart of Midlothian but began his career at Tottenham Hotspur in 1972. After just one season at Spurs he moved to Middlesbrough where he established himself as a regular in midfield. Souness helped Middlesbrough gain promotion to the English First Division in 1974.

Move to Liverpool

In 1978, Souness signed by Liverpool for a record British transfer fee at the time of £350,000. He was brought in to replace veteran Ian Callaghan in midfield. Souness quickly became an integral part of the great Liverpool teams of the late 70s and early 80s. He added steel and determination to the midfield and complemented the skill and flair of players like Kenny Dalglish.

European Glory with Liverpool

Souness reached the pinnacle of his club career when he captained Liverpool to victory in the 1981 European Cup final against Real Madrid. A 1-0 win saw Souness become the first player born in Scotland to lift the famous trophy. He went on to win the European Cup two more times with Liverpool in 1984 and 1985. During his Liverpool career, Souness also won five First Division titles and four League Cups.

Scotland Captaincy

As well as his club achievements, Souness was also a key player for Scotland. He made his international debut in 1975 and later succeeded Danny McGrain as captain. Souness earned 54 caps for Scotland and captained the team during the 1982 and 1986 World Cup Finals. Known for his inspirational leadership and determination to succeed with Scotland.

Management Career

After retiring as a player in 1984, Souness went into management. His first job was player-manager of Rangers where he broke up the Old Firm dominance of Celtic by leading Rangers to three Scottish league titles. He returned to Liverpool as manager between 1991 and 1994 before going on to manage Galatasaray, Southampton, Torino and Blackburn Rovers. Souness also had a brief spell managing Newcastle United in the Premier League.
