Colin Anderson Stein (born 10 May 1947) is a former Scottish footballer; who represented Hibernian, Rangers (twice), Coventry City, and Kilmarnock. Stein was a member of the Rangers team that won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1971–72; scoring one of the goals in a 3–2 final triumph over Dinamo Moscow. Stein also played for Scotland’s Scottish League XI. In 21 appearances for Scotland, he scored nine goals; including four in a 1970 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Cyprus.
Stein, a Linlithgow native, began his professional career at Armadale Thistle. During the 1960s and 1970s, he played professionally for Hibernian, Rangers; and the Scottish national team. Then again, he played for Coventry City in England. Instrumental in Rangers autographs‘ victory in the 1972 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup Final, scoring the game’s first goal. Rangers won the competition by defeating Stade Rennais; Sporting CP, Torino, Bayern Munich, and Dinamo Moscow.

Equally important Stein equalised in stoppage time to salvage a point for Rangers. Furthermore, Barriers on Stairway 13 at Ibrox gave way minutes after full-time; sparking a chain-reaction pileup of spectators that killed 66 and injured over 200 in what would become known as the second Ibrox catastrophe. According to initial reports, Rangers fans who had left the stadium. Turning back after hearing the crowd yell at Stein’s goal, resulting in the calamity. However, the official investigation into the incident found that all of the spectators were going in the same direction at the time of the fall.
Also, In a match against Cyprus in 1969, Stein scored four goals for Scotland, earning him a hat-trick. Until 2015, when Steven Fletcher scored three times against Gibraltar; he held the record for being the last player to score a hat-trick for Scotland. Stein was a member of Scotland’s national team for 21 years, scoring nine goals in the process.
Besides, after leaving Kilmarnock, Stein played for Elgin City; a Highland League team, in the latter stages of his career.
